Title |
8 George Street (Sarah Daniell Lawrence House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1787-91; altered ca. 1895; alterations removed 1973. Sarah Daniell Lawrence received this house and land by purchase from the estate of her father, Robert Daniell, in 1791. He specified that a house be built on this lot for benefit of his wife or daughters when he made his will in 1787. The building was apparently complete before his death. The house, with a central hall and one room on either side, directly faces the street. Its period can be deduced from the wide, beaded weatherboard siding and the unusual Palladian (Venetian) windows on each gable end of the attic story. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files containing documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence related to the covenant and the sale of the property (including right-of-first-refusal); annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence and other documentation related to the management of the property; historical/chain-of-title research information; FOHG house history (partial, undated); correspondence related to historical research; newspaper article (1972 DYKYC); copy of HCF covenant information card; documentation of HCF's purchase, rehabilitation and sale of the property; plat (in HCF Title). See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography. |
