Title |
32 Society Street (Gabriel B. Browne House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed 1846; rehabilitated 1968; facade restored 1990. Gabriel Browne, a commercial merchant at Gibbes Wharf, built this well-detailed brick house on a raised basement in 1846. According to the city census of 1860, Browne was still the owner-occupant of the site. In exterior form, the house matches those in the eastern block of Hasell Street, but it is a wider building with a more expansive interior than other Ansonborough single houses. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files containing documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the management of the property; annual inspection reports; requests for alteration; architectural drawings; house history including overview, chain-of-title, architectural description, etc. (Butler,2017); newspaper article (1970 DYKYC); 1886 Earthquake Damage Assessment; Hurricane Hugo damage survey; FOHG house history (2015); documentation of HCF's purchase, repair, and sale of the property; copy of HCF covenant information card. See Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography. |
