House history from City of Charleston Tour Guide Training Manual: Constructed late 18th century; altered late 19th century; rehabilitated 1985. This 2½ story Regency period frame house was probably built by George Barksdale, a wealthy planter and former member of the S.C. House of Representatives. In May 1817, George’s nephew and then-owner, Thomas Barksdale, sold the house and it passed through a number of owners, including being purchased in 1859 by merchant Robert Thomlinson, whose family Victorianized the structure between 1888 and 1893. It remained in the Thomlinson family until 1944. After that the house fell into disrepair. During the late 1970s, the Alpha chapter of the national Pi Kappa Phil fraternity used it as its chapter house. In 1985, the house was restored as the Barksdale House Inn and remains so today. |
