Constructed 1840-42. This imposing dwelling, originally of single-house style, was built in 1840-1842 by John Steinmeyer, a successful lumber merchant, on land that was originally part of Harleston Green. Governor Thomas Bennett acquired the property in 1842 for his granddaughters, Mary and Celia Campbell. The property had come full circle because the Bennett family sold it to Steinmeyer originally.
