Title |
86-98 North Market Street (J.S. Weeks and Co. Range) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1845; altered 1935, 1940, 1950; rehabilitated 1988-89. The City Land Company conveyed these lots in the early 1840s, and a series of wholesale grocers occupied the 90-98 North Market Street section. These buildings, constructed as a range, were divided into five sections separated by interior fire walls. All five of these sections have served multiple uses, with either individual or overlapping common tenants, and several have been linked on one or more floors. The granite lintels and window sills on the upper stories are original and support a built-up roof, sloping from front to rear, which is concealed by a flat parapet. 86-88 North Market Street to the east has been the most altered, with the loss of its upper story and the addition of a stepped parapet. Overall, however, the range remains a good example of the type of commercial architecture that once predominated in the Market area. File contains portion of Part I certification (National Register); Rosen and Associates (engineers) structural report on 96 North Market Street (1996). |
