Title |
26 Tradd Street (Robert Ewing House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed after 1778; renovated 1990s. These two adjacent 3-story buildings [26 Tradd Street and 28 Tradd Street] typify the dense construction of this part of Tradd Street after the fire of 1778, and with their unevenly placed ground-floor shop windows, they exhibit the mixed uses of these structures. Robert Ewing, a Scots merchant, erected 26 Tradd Street after his 1785 marriage to Jane Bonneau on land inherited by her. Kept as his primary residence, the 3-story stucco dwelling boasts a semicircular wrought-iron balcony on the second floor. Dr. Peter Joseph More built 28 Tradd Street as a rental investment in about 1790. Although most of the upper-story brickwork remains, the interior was completely removed earlier in the 20th century and now follows a modern floor plan. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report and IRS form 8283; FOHG house histories (1971, 1994, 1999, 2001); historical/chain-of-title research for Part I application (Sarah Fick); historical/chain-of-title research (L. Louis Green); "The Adam Ewing House, 26 Tradd Street: Historical Notes" by Robert Stockton (1995); SC Dept. of Archives and History architectural survey form. Files may eventually contain additional documentation such as annual inspection reports; requests for alterations; correspondence related to the management of the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the sale of the property; etc. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement). No inspection photographs on file (see Easement Manager). |
