Title |
39 South Battery (Magwood-Moreland House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1825. Samuel Magwood, an Ashley River planter, built this 2½ story weatherboard single house for his daughter Susan at the time of her marriage. Constructed on a criss-cross foundation of palmetto logs sunk in mud, the house, despite its filled-marsh location, has remained relatively intact through most earthquakes and hurricanes. Two notable fanlights, one over the street door and the other over the entrance door, grace the exterior facade. The former street door stands within a pedimented architrave with fluted pilasters, and guilloche frieze. Its fanlight is semicircular with delicate double-looped wood tracery. File contains FOHG house histories (ca. 1969, undated, 1994, 2004); newspaper article (1968); entry from 60 Famous Houses; Rosen and Associates (engineers) pre-purchase inspection report (2010); graduate student report on the history of the building/property, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, plats, photos, and other supporting documentation (Sandi Feaster, 2005). |
