Title |
156 Rutledge Avenue (Johnson-Wilber House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1808; renovated ca. 1900, 1990s. Formerly the residence of U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Johnson, this 2½ story Charleston single house passed to the a.N. Wilbur family in the late 19th century. The Wilburs altered the windows and added a substantial rear addition. Threatened with demolition in 1968, the house has been adapted for new uses but retains its splendid interior decoration in the Neoclassical style. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Two files contain documentation of the covenant on the property; correspondence and other documentation related to the covenant and the management of the property; annual inspection reports; narrative history; photocopy of 1805 plat of Hampstead; newspaper article (DYKYC, 1940); newspaper articles and correspondence related to the possible relocation of the house and Ashley Hall School's position and role. The files may eventually contain additional documentation including requests for alterations, etc. See Easement Manager's working files for more information. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for Exh. B photographs and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography. |
