Title |
151 Wentworth Street (Benjamin Lazarus House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed 1849. Build by the wealthy merchant Benjamin Lazarus, a Sephardic Jew, this 3-story frame dwelling on a masonry basement later was used as the Charleston Female Seminary, also known as Miss Kelly's School. Kelly's philosophy was that the school "is designed for the education and training of Christian women." It was during its tenure as a school in the late-19 century that a large 3-story wing was added to the south. However, many of the original elements survive, including beaded weatherboard siding and window surrounds. File contains narrative history (unattributed, undated); newspaper article; house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); Part I certification application (see also Laurens Collection); photocopies of advertisements for Charleston Female Seminary from late 19th century publications. |
