Title |
13 Franklin Street (George Washington Cooper House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1850. Adding to the mix of romantic styles utilized in the building of this part of Franklin Street in the antebellum period, George Washington Cooper, owner of 180 Broad Street, selected a Carpenter Gothic style for this 1850s house. Sheathed in narrow-width siding, the side-hall-plan house boasts an entry portico and 2-story side piazza with lattice columns, decorative verge board on its gable, and a cantilevered 3rd-story window with harmonious gable trim. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal report; annual inspection reports; newspaper article (1969 DYKYC) and captioned newspaper photograph (1967); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); photo of house from This is Charleston ("Antebellum - Notable"); chain-of-title (1849-2010); photocopies of 1888 and 1955 Sanborn Maps. The files may eventually include requests for alterations, easement inspection photographs, and correspondence related to the management of the property. See Easement Manager's working files for more information. See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography. |
