Constructed 1913; renovated and restored 1992. Walker and Burden, architects. C. Bissell Jenkins, the originator of the reclamation project that led to the completion of Murray Boulevard and other streets in this area, became the first to build a residence on the new, grand thoroughfare. Designed by the architectural firm of Walker and Burden, the house remains the most imposing of the Colonial Revival style dwellings built on the peninsula in the early 20th century. The monumental dwelling is fronted by a giant-order Tuscan portico and is constructed of Summerville brick and trimmed in limestone. The four faces of the red tiled roof terminate in a deck surrounded by a balustrade. Jenkins also developed the first residential subdivision on James Island, creating Riverland Terrace in 1925. Sold in 1927 to John B. Farrow, president of the Charleston Country Club, the house served as a veritable center for early-20th century Charleston society. Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; Part I certification (National Register) (designation not indicated); mortgage subordination; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; FOHG garden history (1992, 2008); narrative history (from Part I certification application) and chain-of-title (1921-1989); newspaper articles (DYKYC 1978 and undated); historical research notes (unattributed, 1993); Rosen and Associates inspection report (2002).
