Title |
12 Elizabeth Street (John Carburry House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1851. Originally constructed as a typical Charleston single house John Carburry, a clerk-bookkeeper on Atlantic Wharf, the house was subsequently altered with an Italianate bay, bracketed cornice, and piazza door screen, probably in the late-1890s. The slightly larger scale of Carburry's house can be compared to the adjacent single house at 10 Elizabeth Street, which has similar window trim and was constructed nearly contemporaneously by Aberdeen Gregorie, a free person of color. (Buildings of Charleston by Jonathan Poston.) File contains newspaper article (1977 DYKYC); handwritten staff research "source notes" (scant). |
