Title |
8 Legare Street (Cleland Kinloch Huger House) / 8½ Legare Street |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1857; restored late 1980s. Patrick O'Donnell, contractor. The contractor Patrick O'Donnell, owner-builder of the nearby house at 21 King Street, supervised the construction of this imposing Italianate style dwelling. The house is enclosed by substantial stucco walls. Ironwork lyre gates open onto a marble-tiled walk that approaches a projecting tower entry with an arched door architrave. Retaining its unpainted stucco finish, the house boasts red sandstone sills and window lintels, corner quoining, and a deep entablature with a dentiled cornice. A 2-story piazza on the south stands on square stucco columns. In the early-20th century the property became the residence of Burnet Rhett Maybank, successively mayor of Charleston, governor of South Carolina, and a United States senator. Retaining many of its original features, the interior boasts much original gilt paint on its cornice moldings and many original gas lighting fixtures restored by the present owners. The Huger House and its similarly styled neighbor to the north, 10 Legare Street, were both constructed on lots subdivided from the pre-Revolutionary Miles Brewton property to the east, the houses replacing the original garden temple. O'Donnell also constructed the latter building for Edward North Thurston. In 1953, the extensive kitchen house and quarters at 10½ Legare was subdivided and renovated as a substantial separate residence. File contains FOHG house histories (1992, 2010); FOHG garden history (2010); FOHG house history for the dependency, 8½ Legare (2010); photocopy of 1857 plat. File also contains a comprehensive report compiled by Stephen Ziff (2008) that includes an architectural description of the house, biographical information about Cleland Kinloch Huger, and history of the house (each written by Robert Stockton), as well as contributions to the house by Stephen and Julie Ziff, and photographs of 8 Legare Street (interior and exterior), related properties, and related people. Photographs include: 101-107 Bull Street, 10 Legare, 14 Legare, 15 Legare, 19 King, 27 King, 106 Tradd, 26 South Battery, Cleland Kinloch Huger, College of Charleston, Charles S.
