Title |
32 South Battery (Col. John Ashe House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1782; renovated 1930s. A 19th century writer credited the design of this post-revolutionary house to a builder who worked in partnership with the great pre-Revolutionary Charleston housewright John Fullerton. This impressive 3-story masonry house retains its original 18th century cupola. The Tuscan-columned, double-tiered piazza with French doors and the Italianate style balustrades are probably mid-19th century additions. The first floor nine-over-nine windows, the front doorway, and the dormer with an arched window may remain from the original construction of the house. Some Neoclassical woodwork remains on the interior. Many alterations were made to the house in the 1930s. File contains FOHG garden history (2006); house histories from other tours; historical research notes and house history (Harlan Greene, undated); historical research notes (E. Milby Burton, 1946); newspaper articles (including undated DYKYC); Preservation Society award announcement (Preservation Progress, Mar. 1969); realtor brochure (undated); photocopies of 1798 and undated historical plat; realtor booklet with color photographs about the history and restoration of the house (Lisa D. Mann, undated). |
