Title |
58 South Battery (John Blake House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1800; restored 1985. Built by John Blake, an early president of the Bank of South Carolina, this L-shaped structure exemplifies the endurance of early Charleston construction. Many surrounding buildings of the period succumbed to the natural disasters that plagued Charleston during the 19th century; yet this building, constructed on a masonry foundation with cypress and heart pine framing, survived. The structure possesses a wealth of late-Georgian and Federal details on both the exterior and interior, especially in its modillioned cornice. Its old parterre, visible through early-19th century wrought-iron gates, was restored by the present owner. (Poston, Buildings of Charleston.) Three files contain documentation of the easement on the property including related correspondence and Confirmation of Understanding; correspondence related to the sale of the property; Part I certification (National Register); easement appraisal; annual inspection reports, requests for alterations, and correspondence related to the management of the property; architectural drawings submitted in support of Request for Alternations; FOHG house history (undated/1980s?); FOHG garden histories (1994, 1999, 2010); newspaper articles (including 1983) DYKYC); article from Landscape Architecture (undated); house history from Information for Guides of Historic Charleston (1984); house history from Vernacular Architecture of Charleston and the Lowcountry; historical/chain-of-title research notes; photocopy of 1984 plat; Historic Structures Report (Preservation Consultants, 2000). See Easement Documentation Photo Files for easement donation photographs (Exh. B to Deed of Conservation Easement) and Covenant/Easement Inspection Photo Files for inspection photography. |
