Research materials pertaining to the Johnson Funeral Home, located at 440 Venning Street in Mount Pleasant. The building served as both the home and business for Marguerite and Peter S. Johnson. Written and compiled by HCF 2018 summer intern Sada Stewart under the supervision of Katherine Pemberton, done in preparation for a National Register of Historic Places Registration application. The SC Department of Archives and History determined the property was ineligible since it was the residence of the owners, so the nomination was not pursued. However, the materials provide documentation and research of the funeral home business as well as of a predominantly African American residential area in Old Mount Pleasant. Five files: File 1: Contains draft of the National Register of Historic Places Registration Form. Includes statements pertaining to the historic and current physical appearance and condition of the property and of the significance of the property. Also includes building timeline and summary of architectural features. File 2: Contains background information for Mount Pleasant and funeral homes from a variety of sources including news and journal articles. Also includes report "Mount Pleasant's Institutions: Proceedings of the Third Forum on the History of Mount Pleasant (ed. Amy Thompson McCandless, 1993). File 3: Contains 440 Venning chain-of-title and a variety of deeds, maps, and plats. File 4: Contains a variety of records pertaining to Peter Johnson's ancestry including Census records, obituaries. and newspaper articles. File 5: Contains notes and source materials pertaining to Marguerite Johnson. |
