Title |
1 Philadelphia Alley (William Johnson's Row House) |
Scope & Content |
Constructed ca. 1799 by Revolutionist William Johnson and his son. One of a row of townhouses that run west from Philadelphia Alley along Queen Street, joined at the roof and of a transitional type of architecture at the time when Georgian building was waning and the Adam type was becoming fashionable. It was completely restored in the 1930s. Philadelphia Alley was originally named Kinloch Court (ca. 1788) but changed to Philadelphia Street ca. 1810 probably when it was opened through at its northern end. William William Johnson owned much of the property in the vicinity. Also known as Cow Alley. (Sources: FOHG house histories, Units of Charleston by E. Milby Burton; Charleston Streets website.) File contains FOHG house histories (drafts and ca. 1970s?); newspaper article about William Johnson's Row Houses (22-28 Queen Street) (DYKYC 1976). |
