Collection consists of documentation related to rehabilitation of almost 150 historic buildings throughout Charleston. Preservation Consultants specialized in the identification of a structure's history, historic fabric, significance, and architectural integrity, and had experience with rehabilitating historic structures through adaptive use, while retaining original character and architectural significance. Most files contain the National Register Part 1 Certification Application, the Part 2 application outlining the rehabilitation work, and other related documentation. Files usually include associated photographs (copies and/or originals) documenting "before, during, and after" rehabilitation. Files may also include historical research notes and records, newspaper articles, technical reports, architectural drawings, etc. See Container List for more detail. The filing of a Historic Preservation Certification Application Part 1 (Evaluation of Significance) seeks the National Park Service's authorization that the structure contributes to the significance of a historic district, upon which the structure becomes a certified historic structure. A certified historic structure may then be eligible for a rehabilitation tax credit, which is accomplished through filing of a Historic Preservation Certification Application Part 2 (Description of Rehabilitation). The work must meet the Secretary of State's Standards for Rehabilitation Projects. Upon completion of the work, the rehabilitation must be certified in order for any tax credits to be received. |
