Object ID # SOCIETY.066.1
Title 66 Society Street (Hieronymous-Roper House)
Object Type Property File
Scope & Content Constructed 1839; renovated ca. 1850-52, 1966-68. The widow Martha Laurens Roper, former mistress of the splendid house at 9 East Battery and a plantation owner in her own right, purchased a masonry single house at this address when its builder defaulted, six years after construction, on the mortgage. Mrs. Roper apparently made substantial changes to the building prior to 1852, including the addition of a stair tower that divides the side piazza. The stair tower thus afforded the lengthening of the principal rooms on each floor and permitted these rooms to open off each other, like the double-parlor houses then in fashion (particularly 9 East Battery). Mrs. Roper may also have added the decorative iron columns and railings on the upper tier of the side piazzas. The house has had numerous alterations since the late-1960s, including several piazza enclosures and an unusual adaptation of the first floor to a 2-story loft arrangement. According to the directories, Martha Laurens Roper lived on the site between 1852 and 1855, moving by 1859 to another family house at 5 Legare Street.
