Two-page letter dated July 9, 1884, from Harriet Lowndes Rhett [later Maybank] to her grandfather [Gov. Wm. Aiken, Jr.] about the boat and a few boat rides that she and her siblings went on.
July 9th, 1884
How are / all? We are all quite well. / Edmound got this boat / yesterday and was very / muched [sic] pleased with it. / We went for it in the / cart. It was too wide / and could not get in, / so they filled the cart / with straw and put / the boat on top we got / in it to keep stady [sic], we / went strait [sic] to the pond. / Aiken and Edmound / got in and took us / with them they are teach- / ing Alicia and I to / row and to steer, we like / to go in it very much. / It is called the Mountain / Lilly. The same day we / got in at 11 oclock and / staid [sic] in till 2 and we / went in again in the / evening, we row up and / down the pond.
