|Title||28 Charlotte Street (Sarah Jane Clifford House)|
|Object Type||Property File|
|Scope & Content||
Constructed ca. 1905. This 2-story clapboard house was occupied by Sarah Jane Clifford for a short time. The property was part of the lands held by the Mazyck family before 1803. In the early years of the 19th century, this area was chosen for residential development by wealthy Charlestonians seeking the peace and quiet of a suburban area. However, this house was not constructed for another century, during the early 1900s. A few years before, in 1875, a very simple 2-story frame cottage was constructed in the rear of the property. Two small dependencies, a kitchen, and a privy were also located there. The latter two are gone but the cottage still stands and had been converted into two 1-bedroom apartments.
File contains FOHG house history (1999); graduate student report (Lauren Golden, 2010) on the history of the house, which includes historical and chain-of-title research, maps, photos, and other supporting documentation.
